When Waltham introduced the Model 1892 it was called the Vanguard movement. The first five runs of Model 92s do consist of the Vanguard grade. The sixth run, 7005000-7006000 is deignated in the Gray Book as being the Appleton Tracy & Company grade. The handwritten records however list Riversides and some Vanguards in this run as well. (As pointed out to me by Jerry Treiman) There have been reports of 8 Riversides ranging from 7005624 to 7005950 with 8 ATCs reported before and 1 reported after the Riversides. The handwritten records indicate that serial numbers 7005501 to 7005900 are Riversides. To date, there have been no Vanguards reported. Below you will find a photo of one movement from each group. The Riverside is significant because of the "American Waltham Watch Co." marking. Later Riversides were marked "A.W.W.Co." Likewise, later in production the font used for the "Appleton Tracy & Co." marking will change. The damasceening pattern on the winding wheels in later ATCs will also change. The patern used in this run and in the next run (7006000-7007000 hunting case movements) is the same pattern found on the Model 88 Royal and will be found on the Royal grade later in Model 92 production grade. It will be replaced by the pattern used on the Riverside and for a short time will retain the polished finish that the Riverside uses but around serial number 7,700000 (not exactly sure yet) a brushed finish is applied to the wheels.
